World Bank approves $350 million grant for Malawi hydropower project
Here’s some exciting news that could power up not just Malawi, but your career too. The World Bank has just approved a massive $350 million grant to help build a new hydropower project on the Shire River. It’s called the Mpatamanga Hydropower Project, and it’s set to become the biggest foreign investment Malawi has ever received.
This project will massively boost the country’s electricity supply, with clean, renewable energy that could light up over a million homes. But that’s not even the best part. It’s also expected to create thousands of jobs, especially during the construction phase, which is planned to begin in late 2025.
So, what kind of jobs are we talking about? Think engineers, builders, plant operators, electricians, admin assistants, and support staff, basically, a mix of roles for both skilled professionals and those still building their careers: young graduates, students in technical colleges, or anyone with hands-on skills.
And it doesn’t stop at the power plant. When the country has more reliable electricity, businesses run better - factories, farms, shops, and start-ups can all grow faster. That means even more jobs in other industries like manufacturing, agri-processing, and services.
If you’re a young job seeker, this is your cue to get ready. Explore training in areas like construction, energy, or electrical work. Look out for opportunities from vocational schools, sign up for skills programmes, and stay informed about job openings and contractor announcements linked to the project.
As Nathan Belete, World Bank Country Director for Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, said, “This is a game-changer for Malawi. It unlocks transformative potential across key sectors, drives business growth, and improves millions of lives through clean and reliable power.”
“This is a top priority for us, as it's the most cost-effective way to meet our rising energy demands and unlock inclusive growth.”
