Africa is starting to manufacture electric vehicles... and green jobs

21 countries already have EV plants – or are about to get them. That means a hiring surge to build and manage production

Hello – the mobility sector hasn’t traditionally been a big employer of graduates across Africa. But that looks likely to change. 

Adoption of electric vehicles is accelerating. And with it local production and sales efforts. New companies and markets are developing fast. 

This is initially focused on electric motorbikes, the vehicle category furthest advanced. But cars, buses and lorries are following into local production.

Mechanical engineers and production managers will be needed. But not only. Vehicle plants need everything from accountants to marketers.

This week we explore where the job opportunities may lie and what skills are needed.

Africa only has a few ten thousand electric vehicles rolling on tarmac so far and less than a thousand charging stations. 

  • But that has not deterred EV manufacturers from setting up locally. 

  • Production plants are already in or coming to 21 countries on the continent. 

Why it matters: Vehicle production is highly labour intensive. Automation has been increasing for decades. But even in developed countries, vehicle makers still employ large numbers of people.
