Nail that interview…

Have you ever sat in front of an interview panel and suddenly this happens?

or

Ah, ah! Don’t worry, we’ve all been there.

An interview serves as proof that helps the potential employer determine whether you are the right fit for the role. Not only will they be measuring your skill, they’ll also be assessing your mindset and values. So, how do you convince them that you’re the same impressive person they saw on your CV?

James Watare, an HR professional with over 8 years' experience in talent acquisition, is here to help you prepare better for your next interview. As he says, ‘Confidence doesn’t just happen, it’s built through preparation, mindset, and presence.’ When you are confident, you're less likely to panic or blank out.

How can you boost your confidence in order to handle the interview and walk out feeling in control? Let’s break down tips he gives to boost your confidence and show up as your best self.

  • Set the stage – Whether you’re doing a virtual interview or in person, make sure everything is set and you're well prepared. Test your tech 15 minutes before a virtual interview, don’t wait until it’s time to join. Have water nearby and choose a quiet, distraction-free space. Your camera should be on, so pick a simple, professional background, skip the funny filters. Is it in-person? Arrive early to ground yourself and reduce stress. Being on time is already a point in your application.

  • Use positive self-talk – Speak affirmations out loud that remind you of your strengths. Look in the mirror and say things like: “I’m prepared. I’ve got this.”

  • Dress for confidence – Choose a professional outfit that you feel great in. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows. Even in a virtual interview, dress professionally.

  • Prioritise rest – Put your phone on silent and aim for good sleep hygiene the night before. Rest fuels focus, and focus builds confidence.

  • Stay present – Smile, listen actively, and connect with your interviewer. Think of the interview as a two-way conversation, not a test. If possible, engage in small talk before you start, a simple friendly comment can ease the tension and help you stay present.

  • Nail your intro – Be ready for: “Tell me about yourself.” A confident, clear introduction sets a strong tone for the rest of the interview. Be precise and straight to the point.

Bonus Tip:
Preparation builds confidence, but don’t overdo it.
Find that sweet spot where you’re ready and relaxed.
And remember: The interview is a conversation, not a performance.

Always remember: If you’ve been shortlisted for an interview, it means the employer has already seen something promising in you. Now, they just want proof that what they saw on your CV is who you truly are.

You’ve got this.
