Q&A with Khadija Akanni

Khadijah Akanni is currently an intern at Koolboks Nigeria, a company providing reliable, long-term solar-powered refrigeration solutions. Their devices come equipped with a PAYGO (pay-as-you-go) system tailored to each customer. Depending on user preference, the system can function either as a refrigerator or a freezer. How did Khadijah get here, and is she enjoying it? Let’s find out.
Why did you choose to go into the renewable energy space?
I’m drawn to anything that brings change into the world. With the way the climate is affecting everything, the renewable energy sector feels like the right place to make a difference.
How did you break into it?
It wasn’t easy, but I was determined to get there. I had taken a three-year break from engineering, and as a comeback, I took on a part-time role as an administrative officer. While taking an online Solar PV course, my instructor recommended me for the InstallHER Training Programme.
The InstallHER programme is a transformative initiative designed to empower women in the green energy sector, especially in solar. It bridges the gender gap in this traditionally male-dominated field and builds a more inclusive workforce.
I gave it my best during the training, and through Instollar’s partnership with renewable energy companies, I got the opportunity at Koolboks.
How has the journey been so far?
I’d say it’s been going well! I got a 60% salary increase from my previous role. With the growing deforestation in my region, I’m more motivated than ever to use my skills to drive positive environmental change and contribute to a greener future.
