Spiro is set to build a 50,000 capacity motorcycle plant in Uganda

Spiro, an electric vehicle company, is rapidly expanding its presence across Africa, focusing on electric motorcycles and battery-swapping infrastructure. Currently operating in seven countries—including Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda in East Africa, as well as Togo, Benin, and Nigeria in West Africa—the company plans to extend its reach to Tanzania, Ghana, and Cameroon as part of its ambitious growth strategy.
Why it matters
The Benin-based company is set to establish an assembly plant in Uganda, not just any plant, but a facility with a capacity to produce 50,000 motorcycles. This will be Spiro’s third major plant in Africa. Last year, the company opened a similar 50,000-capacity assembly plant in Kenya and is now preparing to launch a 100,000-capacity facility in Nigeria, which will be the largest on the continent. Spiro also operates smaller assembly plants in Benin and Togo.
Why are we excited?
With an annual production capacity of 50,000 motorcycles, Uganda’s new assembly plant will be among the largest in Africa once completed. Spiro entered the Ugandan market in July 2024, making it one of 11 African countries where the company operates. And the expansion doesn’t stop there, Spiro has ambitious plans to extend its footprint further across the continent.
What does this mean? Jobs. As the company grows, so will employment opportunities, creating roles for young professionals across various sectors. A green expansion leading to green jobs—now that’s something to be excited about. Keep an eye on this.
