Understanding this job ad: Global Events and Conferences Manager at CIFOR-ICRAF
The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF), non-profit science institutions tackling global challenges such as energy insecurity, and the climate and biodiversity crises, is seeking a Global Events and Conferences Manager in Nairobi, Kenya.
What you need to know:
This is a consultancy position for a one-year term. Flexibility and the ability to travel are essential.
Let's break it down:
A degree in communications or a related discipline.....when the recruiter specifies a degree, you must have one. Don’t apply without it. Make sure you have a degree, but don’t limit yourself. A degree related to the job description, such as event planning & management, can get you the job.
At least 5 years experience in global conferences, events planning, logistics and budget management....a portfolio will be valuable here. Showcase your past work and don’t be shy, let the recruiter see it all. Show the events/conferences you planned, covering aspects like the setup, number of attendees, budget, consultants, location etc.
Communication strategies portfolio….you need experience in this area, so be sure to include examples of your work.
Unspoken requirements:
Budgeting skills – you will be required to manage and report on events budgets.
Writing skills – you'll assist in drafting concept notes related to CIFOR-ICRAF campaigns, events etc
Reporting skills - you will report on event outcomes and metrics for donors, partners, and internal use.
Campaign knowledge – you'll work closely with fellow CIFOR-ICRAF COE team members on outreach, mainstream and social media campaigns related to event planning.
Relationship skills – you'll serve as a focal point, developing, and managing relationships with stakeholders, partners and organisations related to the conferences.
Additionally, you should possess strong organisational and communication skills with attention to detail.
Silent signals: Who is likely to hire you now in the renewable energy sector

The rapid expansion of Africa’s green industry indicates that several companies are likely to be hiring soon due to recent significant developments in funding or expansion. Notable examples include:
PowerGen Renewable Energy, in collaboration with a team of investors, is set to deploy 120 MW of off-grid renewable energy systems across Africa. This initiative, backed by funding from the EU and the African Development Bank's Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa, is expected to create diverse job opportunities across the continent.
Infinity Power Holding has secured six projects under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), while Mulilo Renewable Project Developments and Scatec Solar Africa each won one. These projects represent a total investment of about $1.70 billion. The bidders have committed to generating approximately 7,000 jobs during the construction and operational phases.
Total Energies is advancing its renewable energy goals, aiming for 35 GW of generation capacity by 2025 and 100 GW by 2030. This ambitious expansion will require recruitment across various phases of development.
