Hyundai’s $400m comeback to Algeria

Big things are happening in North Africa! Hyundai Motor Group, the world’s third-largest carmaker, is returning to Algeria with a $400 million factory, built in partnership with Omani group Saud Bahwan. Set to be completed by 2026, this plant is Hyundai’s way of reclaiming its spot in the Algerian market after exiting in 2020.

And they’re not the only ones eyeing the region, China’s SFE Electric Car Manufacturing Group are also making moves, proving that Algeria’s auto industry is heating up.

What’s in it for you?

When we highlight it, the impact is far beyond cars! We are looking at jobs, thousands of them! The employment wave is coming from engineers to assembly line workers, logistics experts to administrators. But the impact doesn’t stop there. The factory will need raw materials, transport, and services, meaning local suppliers, logistics firms, construction companies, and even training institutions will benefit.

The factory will produce everything from budget-friendly SUVs to electric models, feeding Africa’s growing demand for affordable EVs. Algeria is attracting automakers with its cheap energy, investor incentives, and economic reforms, along with its strategic location near African and European markets. Hyundai is looking to capitalise on this, making it an ideal time for professionals in the industry to start positioning themselves for opportunities.

And here’s the fun part, by 2027, you could be cruising in a Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kona Electric, or Tucson Plug-In Hybrid, with a proud "Made in Algeria" badge. The auto industry in Africa is evolving. The question is, are you ready for it?
