Morocco’s EV battery Gigafactory

Morocco is about to make history with Africa’s first electric battery Gigafactory. In 2024, state-owned investment fund CDG and China’s Gotion High-Tech signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop the $1.3 billion facility in Kenitra. Production is set to begin in June 2026, marking a major milestone for the country’s automotive industry.

This plant will not only produce EV batteries, but it’ll also manufacture key components like cathodes and anodes, with most of the production set for export. Gotion High-Tech aims to scale the plant’s capacity from an initial 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to an ambitious 100 GWh, with future investments potentially reaching $6.5 billion.

Why does this matter?

Hiring is coming - big time! This investment is a game-changer for Morocco’s automotive sector, accelerating its shift from combustion engines to electric mobility. The country is actively attracting automakers looking to leverage its economic reforms, investor incentives, and cheap energy. Morocco’s proximity to both African and European markets, combined with free trade agreements with key EU and U.S. markets, makes it a prime location for EV battery manufacturers.

The EV sector in the country is expected to create 220,000 new jobs, way beyond factory roles. We’re talking about opportunities in manufacturing and assembly, engineering and R&D, supply chain and logistics, and administration and support. And the momentum isn’t stopping with Gotion High-Tech, other Chinese battery giants are also setting up shop.

Morocco is actively seeking more manufacturers to join its growing EV ecosystem. For professionals looking to break into the industry, this is the time to watch these regions closely, stay informed, upskill, network and apply early.

Africa’s EV revolution is kicking into high gear, and now is the time to prepare for the opportunities ahead.
