How Africa’s mobility sector expansion is translating into employment opportunities

Source: Mobility Rising

Hey,

Welcome to Green Jobs Rising!

In this month’s Projects Tracker, Mobility Rising highlights the rapid growth of electric three-wheeler (E3W) production across the continent.

Local assembly hubs in Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria, alongside full-scale manufacturing in Morocco, are driving demand for technicians, assembly workers, quality control specialists, and supply chain professionals.

Companies such as Stellantis, Alpha, TRI, and EKOGlobe are not only producing vehicles, they are building local industrial capacity.

Stellantis alone can manufacture up to 55,000 E3Ws annually at its Morocco plant, signalling large-scale employment potential in production and operations.

As electric three-wheelers expand into last-mile delivery and informal transport, new roles are emerging across the ecosystem:

  • Fleet operators and drivers transitioning from ICE vehicles

  • Battery swapping station attendants and technicians

  • Maintenance and repair specialists for electric drivetrains

  • Logistics coordinators supporting e-commerce and SME delivery networks

The shift toward battery swapping systems is also creating jobs in energy infrastructure, including station management, battery logistics, and field servicing.

This growth is particularly important because it aligns with existing labour markets. Electric three-wheelers fit naturally into informal transport and small business logistics, meaning job creation is happening within sectors that already employ millions across Africa.

What we’re seeing on the ground is now being matched by capital flowing into the sector, and that’s where job creation starts to scale.

  • MAX raised $24 million after reaching profitability to scale electric motorcycles, driver financing, and battery-swapping infrastructure, driving demand for technicians, fleet managers, and financing operations staff.

  • Enakl secured $2.3 million to expand shared mobility software that optimises transport networks, creating roles in logistics coordination, data operations, and transport system management.

  • Spiro, alongside Nithio, secured a $7 million loan to scale electric motorcycle fleets and battery-swapping networks, increasing demand for battery technicians, field operators, and maintenance workers.

  • International Finance Corporation invested in ARC Ride to expand battery-as-a-service infrastructure, supporting jobs in battery operations, charging systems, and local service networks.

  • Spiro, with backing from Afreximbank, has secured over $50 million to scale EV deployment and battery-swapping infrastructure across Africa, creating large-scale employment in operations, logistics, and energy infrastructure.

While we keep an eye on companies expansion and funding, here are some exciting opportunities in the electric mobility sector that are already open. Click below to explore and apply for the role that best fits your skills and goals.
