Ghana-based energy startup Kofa secures $8.1 million to expand across East and West Africa
Ghanaian clean tech startup Kofa has raised $8.1 million in pre-Series A funding to fuel its growth and expand its AI-powered battery-swapping network across urban Africa, starting with Ghana and Kenya.
Launched in 2022, Kofa is building a swappable battery network that delivers clean, reliable energy for motorcycles, small businesses, and households. It’s already making waves in the sector with over 200 battery swaps a day, an impressive 99 percent charge rate, and average swap times under two minutes. The secret sauce? Its in-house Internet of Things (IoT) system, which tracks battery usage, predicts demand, and optimises energy distribution - saving time, reducing fuel costs, and helping businesses keep the lights on.
Why is this important?
Africa’s energy challenges are real. In some areas, backup generators account for nearly 40 percent of electricity supply, while motorcycles burn through up to 60 billion litres of petrol each year, creating a hefty emissions problem. Kofa’s clean energy network aims to flip that script by helping cities move away from fossil fuel dependency.
And here’s where you come in. This kind of growth demands more than just funding, it needs people. From engineers and product designers to operations managers and sales talent, Kofa’s expansion could unlock a wave of green jobs across the continent. If you’re eyeing up a future in clean energy or mobility tech, this is one startup worth keeping tabs on.
