New hire Q&A

“This planet that we call home is under threat from climate change, which luckily, we can do something about.”

Brian Ambani, Content lead, Mobility Rising

Q: Give us a brief of what you do in your new role

A: I am the senior content lead for e-mobility, a publication that covers Africa's rapidly growing electric mobility sector.  This is a sector that is fairly new to Africa, which means that information about the sector isn't always readily available or reliable. My role is to be part of the solution by providing Africa's e-mobility professionals with timely and reliable information that they can use to make informed decisions. I enjoy being part of the continent's journey towards the adoption of clean mobility solutions.

Q: Is this your first role in the green sector?

A: No. I've been covering the green sector since July 2019 in my previous role as a business reporter at the Nation Media Group (NMG). I've covered major stories in this sector, which is gaining traction quickly on the continent. Some of my top stories include covering Kenya's journey to its leading position as a renewable electricity generator in Africa. I have also had the privilege of visiting and covering the country's main renewable power generation hub at Olkaria in Nakuru County where the bulk of Kenya's geothermal energy is generated.

Q: What inspired you to work in this sector?

A: I have always been fascinated by people and places. Geography was my favourite subject in school. But then I came to learn that this planet that we call home is under threat from climate change, which luckily, we can do something about. This is why I was attracted to covering the green economy. It enables me to share stories about what individuals and entities are doing to solve the climate problem.

Q: What’s been the most rewarding project you’ve worked on so far?

A: In my role, every day is new. When I wake up each morning, I always get something fresh to tell regarding electric mobility in Africa. This is my favourite part of this role. Sometimes, some stories, such as Burkina Faso recently launched its first locally made electric vehicle, come out of the blue and pleasantly surprise us!

Q: If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting in the e-mobility sector or sustainability, what would it be?

A: Like in life, you should strive to learn a new thing about the e-mobility sector each day. It will keep your mind fresh and updated about all that is happening within the sector. Electric vehicles are growing fast in Africa, and so should your knowledge about them!

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.
