New hire Q&A with Sharon Wayua
Inside life at Regen Organics and the biochar plant

Hey,
Welcome to Green Jobs Rising!
In our New Hire Q&A today, we’re chatting with Sharon Wayua, who works at Regen Organics.
Sharon describes herself as an introvert 😊 and true to form, her answers are crisp, and straight to the point. Honestly, probably the shortest interview I’ve done so far. 😀
Enjoy!
Q: Hey Sharon, introduce yourself to the GJR community
A: I am Sharon Mwende Wayua. I studied Electrical and Electronics Engineering. I work at Regen Organics in maintenance and operations for the biochar plant. Basically, we have a machine that we use to make a biochar reactor. I installed it, maintain it, and run its operations.
Q: How did you get into Regen Organics
A: I was working with one of their members, who later referred me to Regen Organics. I went for an interview, passed, and that’s how I ended up here.
Q: What’s one moment that made you realise this is the kind of work you want to do?
A: In this field, there are so many opportunities. I realised that most of the machines are designed, fabricated, installed, and maintained by the team itself, all in-house. That really caught my interest. You get to be part of every stage: designing, fabricating, installing, maintaining, and running the machine. It gives you a full picture of how everything works.
Q: Who or what keeps you grounded when the work feels overwhelming?
A: My biggest motivator is one of our engineers, Ernest. I really admire how he works, even when there’s a lot of pressure, he stays calm and focused. I always try to follow in his footsteps, and he often encourages me when things get tough.
Q: Which part of your work makes you feel you’re making a tangible difference?
A: Designing and maintaining, those are the moments I can really see the impact of what I’m doing.
Q: What’s an idea or innovation in your field that excites you right now?
A: When we’re doing machine trials with new feedstock, adjusting the settings and seeing how the system responds always excites me. Every test teaches you something new.
Q: What do you love most about working in the green sector?
A: Since joining, I’ve seen how much we’re doing to clean the environment, and that’s what I love most. Everything we do makes the planet a bit better for the next generation.
For example, in the biochar plant, we’re tapping carbon instead of releasing it into the environment. And when I look at other teams, like those working with Evergrow, they’re out there cleaning up the streets and collecting waste.
To me, this work is environmentally friendly and full of purpose, that’s why I choose it every day.
Q: If your job was a song/movie/book, what would it be and why?
A: 🎵 Eye of the Tiger by Survivor.
Q: Describe your workday in three emojis
A: I want to make that four 🔥 🦺 👷 🌳
