Online forum recap: Where are the green jobs

Key takeaways from our latest clean energy forum with industry recruiters

Hey,

Welcome to Green Jobs Rising!

Last week we hosted the second edition of our Green Jobs Rising Online Forum, bringing together hiring experts from the renewable energy sector to answer an important question: where are the jobs in clean energy, and how can young professionals position themselves for them?

Recruiters and analysts working across Africa shared practical insights on career opportunities, skills in demand, and how candidates can stand out.

A key theme from the discussion was that Africa’s renewable energy sector is entering a strong period of growth

With abundant solar and wind resources and increasing investment in energy projects, the continent is well positioned in the global energy transition.

This growth is creating new career opportunities for professionals who want to work in climate and energy.

While engineering roles remain critical, particularly in electrical engineering for solar and storage systems, mechanical engineering for wind projects, and civil engineering for construction, the sector requires far more than technical specialists.

As renewable energy companies grow, they also hire for roles in HR, finance, logistics, operations, communications and customer service.

Many of these roles rely on transferable skills, meaning professionals from other industries can successfully transition into the clean energy space.

Technology is also becoming increasingly important. Modern renewable energy systems generate large volumes of data from equipment such as solar panels, wind turbines and battery storage systems.

Professionals with backgrounds in ICT, data analysis or software development are therefore valuable in building monitoring systems, analysing performance data and improving efficiency.

The panel also shared practical advice on job applications and interviews. A clear, concise CV remains essential, as recruiters often review many applications in a short period of time.

A strong CV should include your contact details, a short professional summary, key skills, work experience and education.

Candidates are also encouraged to highlight achievements rather than just responsibilities, using numbers or measurable results to demonstrate their impact.

AI tools can help refine CVs and understand job descriptions, and candidates are advised not to rely on them too heavily.

Applications that are overly polished or generic can make it harder for recruiters to see what makes a candidate unique.

AI should be used as a helper, not as the writer of the entire application.

For interviews, preparing examples that demonstrate problem-solving and impact can help when answering competency-based questions.

Finally, be proactive in your career. Many professionals grow quickly because they volunteer for new projects, take on challenges and make their work visible.

In a fast-growing sector like renewable energy, this mindset can open doors and accelerate learning.
