Making sense of job ads, one role at a time

Hey,

Welcome to Green Jobs Rising!

Baker Hughes, an energy technology company providing solutions for energy and industrial customers worldwide, is looking for a Tool Specialist for the delivery of manual tool-handling tasks related to cross-product line Baker Hughes services.

The ad does not say much about educational background but places heavy emphasis on experience as the foundation for the role.

If this role is in your line of work and you want to apply, what should you look out for to make your CV reach the interviewer’s desk?

Let’s look at what the recruiter will be focusing on.

  • Location - The job ad specifies London as the location. If a role is open to applicants worldwide, the ad usually mentions visa sponsorship. In this case, they are not sponsoring visas, so the recruiter will only consider candidates already in London.

This cuts out many qualified candidates in Africa, but if you are based in London, this could be your chance.

  • Experience - After location, the recruiter’s next filter is experience. Looking at the job description, candidates with experience in oil and gas projects at the rig, either onshore or offshore, will be prioritised. This is because you cannot just have an interest in oil and gas; you must have done the job before.

While the JD does not list exact tools, you can get an idea of the tools involved by going through the ad. Some of the technical requirements include:

    • Experience in oilfield services and equipment

    • Proven experience in rig operations (onshore or offshore)

Some engineers do not handle tools but focus on project coordination. They may claim oil rig experience, but in reality, they lack the technical skills.

In this case, the first two requirements are extremely important as they are the primary filters.

  • Certifications - Once candidates with core experience have been shortlisted, the next filter will be the nice-to-haves that help narrow down the pool further. For example, not everyone is certified to work offshore.

If you have both onshore and offshore certifications, you are in luck, as this gives the client more flexibility.

After all the filters have been applied, the list may be narrowed to around five candidates. If there are still ten strong applicants, the deciding factor becomes years of experience.

As you prepare to apply for this or any similar role, remember that the main filters recruiters use are location, core experience, certifications, and relevant qualifications.

Here’s a quick guide on how to apply for jobs on our job board.

Make sure your CV fits these criteria, since the recruiter’s job is to go down the list of JD requirements and rule out candidates based on what they lack.
