Grow your network with Safiatou Nana, the solar innovator transforming farming and energy access

Hey 👋

Welcome to Green Jobs Rising! Ready to grow your green network on LinkedIn but not sure who to follow? We’ve got you covered.

This week, we’re heading to Burkina Faso to spotlight a clean energy leader transforming rural farming with off-grid solar, and building serious climate resilience along the way.

We’ve also rounded up fresh funding opportunities in the green sector just for you.

Let’s dive in! 🚀

Good to follow on LinkedIn: Safiatou Nana

Meet Safiatou Nana, Head of Programs at the African Center for Climate, Energy and Sustainable Development (AFRICED).

She’s a renewable energy and climate change engineer, as well as an entrepreneur. Passionate about climate advocacy, clean energy, and environmental protection, she has focused her research and work on bringing energy access to rural communities through off-grid, solar-powered systems.

She is the founder of SolarKoodo, a start-up supporting smallholder farmers to increase productivity and reduce post-harvest losses through the productive use of solar energy. Her work also involves training farmers on climate adaptation and pollution reduction in agriculture.

In 2019, Safiatou was recognised by ONE as one of the “5 African Innovators to Watch” for her work on a mobile, solar-powered water pumping system. Powered by an adjustable solar panel, the system runs a motor that pumps water from boreholes. But here’s what makes it brilliant: it’s designed to be highly mobile. Unlike permanent installations, the SolarKodo can be shared by a group of farmers, easily moved from one borehole to another like a hand-cart.

Funding opportunities in the green sector

Are you working on a project that could transform the future of energy, water, or environmental sustainability? Here are a few open calls and contracting opportunities that might be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for:

  • Mozambique / 3 MW Solar/BESS Mini-Grids / Tender for four mini-grids combining solar and battery storage in Nampula province. Targeting off-grid energy access.

  • South Africa / Solar for Health Facilities / Call for bids to supply, install, and commission five PV solar systems at healthcare sites in the Western Cape.

  • South Africa / Eskom Plant Waste Management / Eskom seeks a provider for milling plant reject removal at Camden Power Station, with a 60-month contract period.

  • Mauritania / 550 MW Gas-to-Power IPPs. Government to receive bids for two gas-fired IPP projects, including a 250 MW plant tied to the GTA gas field. Marks the shift to a fully privatised power generation model to support industrial growth and full electrification by 2030.
