đŁ What HR professionals are sayingâŠ
Have you been busy hustling and want to join the green sector but donât have the âgreen sectorâ experience on your CV yet?
Youâre not alone, and youâre definitely not out of the race. One of the biggest concerns for beginners and career changers is this, âHow can I stand out against candidates whoâve been doing this longer than I?â
Hereâs the good news; You absolutely can. You just need to craft a smart application, starting with a cover letter that sells your story. Your CV will highlight your transferable skills, but your cover letter is where you explain your âwhyâ and show your potential. Hereâs how to write one that stands out:
Ace the Opening - Whatever you do, donât be boring. Your intro needs to grab attention. Think, âWhy am I excited about this role?â âWhat drew me to sustainability?â âWhy am I drawn to this company?â
Many hiring managers stop reading after the first few lines, so give them a reason to keep going.
Promote Yourself - This section is all about why youâre great at what youâve been doing, even if itâs not green-related. Mention your proudest achievements so far. Say, what value do you bring that would benefit this new industry? Donât hold back.
Explain the Change - Making a pivot? Be clear and confident about it.
Whether youâre switching because you want more purpose in your work, or because youâve grown passionate about climate and sustainability, say so.
Tip: Stay professional and positive. Never badmouth a previous employer or sector.Emphasise Your Experience - Just because itâs not industry-specific doesnât mean itâs not relevant. Skills like leadership, teamwork, communication, adaptability, and problem-solving matter across every sector. Back them up with examples and numbers, if youâve got them. Think: âLed a team of 5 to deliver a project two weeks ahead of scheduleâŠâ âOrganised a student sustainability fair that attracted 200+ attendeesâŠâ
Sign Off in Style - End with a strong call to action. Reaffirm your interest, show enthusiasm, and make sure your contact details (and LinkedIn profile link) are included. Confidence counts, leave them with no doubt that youâre ready to grow and contribute.
Just because youâre new to green work doesnât mean you donât belong. The sector needs fresh energy, new ideas, and people from diverse paths, like you. So tell your story well. Youâve got this. đȘ
