Tips on earning a referral
A few newsletters back, one of the HR professionals I spoke to mentioned how important referrals are and how sometimes, you can find yourself referred by someone you barely know. She spoke about attending events and meeting people. In most cases, you never know how the person you’re interacting with might help you. That chance encounter might just be the door you’ve been waiting for your whole life.
Today, I came across a post from an HR professional on LinkedIn, offering advice to young professionals on the importance of referrals.
In a job search, a referral is when someone in your network recommends you for a role, either at their own company or one they’re connected to. Referrals can be powerful tools because they provide employers with a way to learn about potential candidates without going through traditional job postings or CV reviews. Referrals also carry a level of trust and credibility that other methods may not, as employers are more likely to take seriously the recommendation of someone they know and trust. It is a technique job seekers use to get extra attention from an employer.
Referrals matter. They count. They're the best. They're golden. They're everything! Whether it's 5 days or 5 years ago
So, what advice does James Watare, an HR professional, give on how to earn a referral?
Produce consistently high-quality work.
Take extra care with each client - Treat each client with utmost respect as though they’re the only client you’ll ever have.
Know what you don’t know and never pretend to be something you’re not.
Deliver superb service with integrity and to the satisfaction of the person who entrusted you to help them.
Bottom line? Earn a referral and you’ll earn a living. They’re a big deal.
