Yes, you can ask that!

Tips from HR on turning your curiosity into a career strength

Hey,

Welcome to Green Jobs Rising!

I came across a post on X this week that had some interesting interactions

Now, I’m not sure whether it was a real email from an actual recruiter or someone just fishing for engagement, but it definitely caught my attention.

Is it really okay to ask questions in an interview without being penalised for it?

Let’s refer back to one of the HR professionals we interviewed a while ago, Goretti Akombe.

“Asking questions is good. I always say there’s no stupid question as long as you’re objective.”

But she adds something important: while constructive questioning is valuable, learning how to ask questions professionally is a skill many young professionals still need to develop.

“Before you ask a question, read the room and know how to package it appropriately. Two people can ask the exact same question, one sounds thoughtful, the other sounds rude.”

She also points out that many young professionals haven’t yet mastered how to present their personality.

And that matters, because we’re talking about a curious, questioning generation, one that challenges norms, seeks transparency, and isn’t afraid to ask ‘why.’

Sometimes success in an interview is not what you say or just your years of experience, it is the little gestures or actions you take during that interview that can stand you out.
